Starting your studies: first semester

To start your studies on solid ground, it's essential to refer to the study plan, module handbook, and examination regulations. Make sure you register for your courses via the LSF-Portal at the start of each semester, before the designated deadlines. Exceptions may apply for First-semester students. Instructions on how to select the courses can be found in the FAQ. You can find a detailed guide on using LSF, as well as the current schedule, in the Documents and Guides section of this website.

When planning your studies, your letter of admission will give you important information about individual requirements. In the Requirements section of it, you can see which three of the Foundational Courses you have to choose for Module 1 (M1 (Foundation Course):  Fundamentals of [...]). Please be aware, that in order to fulfill admission requirements some students will have to choose additional courses during their first semesters. These are listed in the Admission Requirements section of your letter of admission (e.g. Fundamentals of Philosophy (i.e. in addition to M1, 2 credit points)) . More information about admission requirements can be found in the FAQ.

At the beginning of each semester, student representatives of the Fachschaftsrat Philosophy and Political Science will organize an orientation week for new students.

During your studies…

Before the start of each semester (usually end of March/September) you have to start with your course registration for the following semester. Please note the respective registration deadlines, which may vary depending on the institute. You can register for lectures and seminars via LSF. Don't hesitate to get in touch with the relevant lecturer if registration is impossible for technical reasons.

Towards the end of each semester, you have to register for your exams and course work. Be aware that course registration does not automatically entail registration for an exam or course work. Coursework and module examinations must always be registered via BOSS. Please also note the respective deadlines for registration and deregistration. If registration or deregistration is impossible for technical reasons, please contact Thomas Bergermann in the Central Examination Office.

You can find a detailed guide on how to use LSF, Moodle and BOSS in the Documents and Guides section of this website.

Internships

Module 9 focuses on gaining practical experience during an internship. You can deepen your chosen focus of study in international organizations, associations, foundations and many other institutions. More detailed information about the internship can be found in the module handbook and the examination regulations. The International Office has compiled information on formalities and advice on how to find and apply for internships in Germany.

In the internship guide, you will find all relevant information and requirements on how to register and complete the internship. Additional information can be found in the FAQ. If you need inspiration on what internships to consider, you can ask the Marepol Coordination for a list of internship opportunities.

Scholarships

There are no tuition fees in Germany. This is a great advantage when choosing Germany as a place to study. Nevertheless, it is only possible to study partially for free. The semester fee (around 300€), as well as rent and food, cost money. This is why many students want to apply for scholarships.

Several scholarships are available at TU Dortmund University for enrolled students who stand out for their grades or commitment. TU Dortmund University does not offer any scholarships to prospective students. However, we have compiled a selection of different scholarship opportunities for you on this page. You can find more scholarships, e.g., in the German Academic Exchange Service scholarship database. Please note that some scholarships are only available to EU or non-EU citizens. This depends on the type of funding orientation.

More information about Scholarships for international students can be found on the website of the International Office of the University.
